SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's dropped a hard-fought game, 69-67, to the Missouri Southern State Lions on Friday afternoon after Marvin Binney's layup rolled out of the basket at the buzzer.

The matchup saw both squads fighting to pull away throughout both frames, as the lead changed 14 times and the score tied 11 times. The largest gap seen in the game was the Lion's seven-point lead late in the second half.

Three Rattlers scored in double-digits, led by Justin Alexander's (Sr., San Antonio) career-high 21 points. Marvin Whitt (Sr., Birmingham, Ala.) and Marvin Binney (Sr., Toronto, Ontario) chipped in 14 and 12 points, respectively.

With about four minutes left in the final frame, the Lions held their largest lead of the game at seven, until Alexander hit two free throws at the line and a shot in the paint that brought the Rattlers within three with just three minutes on the clock.

The Lions (4-3) extended their lead back to five, which was quickly cut down to two when Binney hit a 3-pointer at the top of the key. But Rattler fouls sent the Lions to the line, giving them a 67-63 lead with under one minute left to play.

With another opportunity at the foul line, the Lions pushed their lead out to three. An offensive rebound and layup from Whitt put the Rattlers within one point with 10 seconds on the clock.

After a missed Lion free throw with four seconds to play, the Rattlers brought the ball up the court and drove to the basket. With the missed buzzer-beater shot, the Rattlers fell to the Lions 69-67.

The Rattlers (1-3) took control of the boards throughout, pulling down 34 rebounds to the Lions' 27. Alexander and Binney both had six boards apiece, while Isaiah Matthews (R-Sr., Texas City, Texas) and Joe Monroe (R-Sr., San Antonio) contributed four each.

The referees called the game meticulously, checking the replay monitor four times throughout the game, showing how tight things were throughout. Between the two squads, there were 51 total fouls called. St. Mary's was charged with 27, while Missouri Southern was charged with 24.

Both teams took advantage of their time at the line, with the Rattlers going 16 of 25 and the Lions shooting 21 of 30.

The first half stayed tight throughout, seeing the gap widen to only six points late in the frame. The Rattlers trailed going into halftime, 31-28.

The Rattlers return to the court Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. to take on Midwestern State University in the final game of the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic.
