Men's hoops notch dominating victory over Midwestern State

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Men's Basketball immediately took control of Midwestern State Sunday afternoon from the very first possession of the game, going on to take down the Mustangs 63-50 in commanding fashion.

The Rattlers forced the Mustangs into a shot-clock violation on their first possession shortly after tip-off, setting the stage for StMU's persistent defense that the Mustangs were unable to overcome.

"We were talking about coming out and hitting them in the mouth first," said senior Joe Monroe after the game. "Everyone was sitting in their defensive stance and talking. If you looked at our bench, everyone was standing up the entire time during that play."

From that point forward, the Rattler defense never let up, forcing 17 Mustang turnovers for the game.

Leading the way offensively for the Rattlers were Kriston Minor (Jr., Huntsville, Texas) and Marvin Binney (Sr., Toronto, Ontario), scoring eleven and ten points, respectively.  Marvin Whitt (Sr., Birmingham, Ala.) and Isaiah Matthews (R-Sr., Texas City, Texas) contributed nine points apiece while Justin Alexander (Sr., San Antonio) chipped in eight.

The Rattlers dominated the boards, outrebounding the Mustangs 40 to 28 for the game led by Matthews who pulled down eight rebounds followed by Alexander who recorded six. J.J. Bolton (Sr., Beaumont, Miss.) and Joe Monroe (R-Sr., San Antonio) both contributed five boards apiece.

During the first half, the Rattlers (2-3) and Mustangs (4-3) battled defensively, staying scoreless until the 18-minute mark. The lead alternated one time before the Rattlers began to make their run.

The squad stretched their lead to 13 points with 6:30 left to play in the first frame, but the Mustangs fought back, cutting the lead to only three with the Rattlers ahead 26-23 at the break.

The second half saw the Rattlers keep the lead throughout the entire frame, shooting impressive 46.2 percent from the field and controlled the boards, outrebounding the Mustangs 25 to 10 after being narrowly outrebounded by the Mustangs in the first half, 18-15.

"This season didn't start out how we wanted it to," Monroe said of the Rattlers' 1-3 start. "We're going to try to keep building on what we did today. We're going to pay attention to detail and work on playing hard and playing smart."

The Rattlers return to Bill Greehey Arena Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. to face the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas.
