Cold second half hurts StMU women against MSU

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

DENTON, Texas — An ice-cold shooting performance in the second half doomed the St. Mary's women's basketball team in Saturday's 62-48 loss to Midwestern State.

The Rattlers (2-2) missed all six 3-point attempts and shot just 26.5 percent from the floor (9 of 34) in the half, setting the table for MSU (4-1) to break open a game in which it took a slim 25-23 lead into the break.

One night removed from a career-high 32-point performance, senior forward Morgan Pullins scored a game-high 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting. Pullins was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 26.5 points per game at the Texas Woman's Classic.

Dezirae Elias scored 10 points, including connecting on the team's only made 3-pointer, and Kiara Etheridge scored five to go along with a team-high seven rebounds on the final day of the tournament.

Things looked good for St. Mary's early, as the Rattlers jumped to a 9-2 lead following a 3-pointer from Elias less than four games into the game. Later in the half, StMU jumped to its largest lead, 19-11, on a Pullins jumper with 6:08 remaining.

But MSU got going, putting together a 10-1 run to take its first lead, 21-20, on a Dianna Jones layup at the 3:06 mark.

St. Mary's would battle back to retake the lead early in the second half, as a free throw from Elias put StMU back up 28-27 with 17:19 left. But after seeing the score evened at 30-30 moments later, the Mustangs went on a 17-6 run to open up an 11-point lead, 47-36, with 8:29 left. The lead swelled to as large as 18 with just over a minute left.

The Rattlers will return to action Friday against Colorado State-Pueblo on the opening day of the St. Mary's Classic. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
