Defense, clutch free throws send Rattlers to victory over TAMUK

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

KINGSVILLE, Texas — Clutch shooting down the stretch and pressure defense propelled St. Mary's Women's Basketball over Texas A&M-Kingsville Tuesday night, winning 80-71 in a tight match up that saw four Rattlers score in double figures.

StMU ended the game with the largest lead of the night at nine as the game was close throughout with the Snakes leading by just four with 55 seconds remaining in the game.

The Rattlers went 6-8 at the line in the final minute of the game, which included four straight from Dezirae Elias (Jr., Chandler, Ariz.), enabling a buffer over a made Javelina three with just 14 seconds left in the game.

Kyra Littlejohn (Southfield, Mich.) capped off the victory with a steal off a full-court press and a made layup at the buzzer, ending a career night for the senior.

Littlejohn recorded a career-high 19 points against the Javelinas (0-3), sharing the game-high with fellow Rattler Morgan Pullins (Sr., Franklin, Mich.) who also recorded 19 points and totaled three blocks.

Kiara Etheridge (So., San Antonio) and Elias also broke double digits with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Pullins and Etheridge shared the team-high in rebounds with eight apiece while Elias recorded five assists and Littlejohn led the team with four steals.

The Javelinas started the second half on a 10-0 run after going into the break down 37-32 that gave TAMUK its largest led of the game at 44-37. The Rattlers were able to chip away at early-half surge to regain the lead at 59-58 with six minutes remaining in the game.

The Rattlers dominated on full-court press and capitalizing on easy buckets, scoring 30 points off turnovers with 48 points coming in the paint.

The victory over Lone Star Conference contender TAMUK improved the Rattlers to 3-2 on the season, recharging them after two tough losses to regional contenders Midwestern State and Texas Women's last week.

The Rattlers return to the court at the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic, playing their first home game of the season at 1 p.m. Friday against Colorado State-Pueblo.
