Comeback stalls as offense goes cold down the stretch

By Kaeleen Zeleznak | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

KINGSVILLE, Texas — It was tight matchup as the Rattlers traveled to Kingsville, Texas to take on the Javelinas of Texas A&M-Kingsville Tuesday evening, as St. Mary's fell to the Javelinas, 76-71.

A layup from Joe Monroe (R-Sr., San Antonio) cut a one-time 11-point deficit to a single point with 2:23 remaining, but the Rattlers hit just one of their final seven shot attempts to end any comeback hope. The loss dropped St. Mary's to 1-2 on the season.

Marvin Whitt (Sr., Birmingham, Ala.) and Ryan Thomas (Sr., River City, Utah) led the charge for the Rattlers, contributing 20 and 11 points, respectively. J.J. Bolton (Sr., Beaumont, Miss.) chipped in eight points, while Isaiah Matthews (R-Sr., Texas City, Texas) added six.

The Rattlers out-rebounded the Javelinas 35-27 with Bolton pulling down seven boards for the squad, followed by Marvin Binney (Sr., Toronto, Ontario) and Whitt, who added five rebounds apiece.

St. Mary's held onto a narrow lead for the first 11 minutes in the first half, with their largest lead being five at the 16-minute mark. With eight minutes left to play in the first half, the Javelinas took the lead for the first time of the game; the Javelinas maintained their lead for the remainder of the half, heading to halftime leading the Rattlers 41-35.

Returning from the break, the Rattlers battled back in full force, cutting the Javelinas 11-point lead, their largest of the game, to a one-point deficit with nine minutes left in the second frame. Despite pulling within one, the Rattlers were not able to overpower the Javelinas' shooting 53 percent from the field and 54 percent from beyond the arc.

The Javelinas pushed back, stretching their second-half lead back out to six before the Rattlers rallied back to pull within one once again at the 2:23 mark. The Rattlers only connected with one of their seven shot attempts in the final two minutes, sealing their fate against the Javelinas.

The Rattlers resume play as they host their annual St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic, opening play against Missouri Southern on Friday, November 28 at 3 p.m. inside Bill Greehey Arena.
