By Kaeleen Zeleznak | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

IGNACIO, Colo. — It was a victorious end to the Skyhawk Classic for the Rattlers as St. Mary's stunned the Western New Mexico University Mustangs with a 77-52 victory Saturday, moving them to a 1-1 record on the young season.

The Rattler bench had an impressive showing against the Mustangs, as Kriston Minor (Jr., Huntsville, Texas) and Isaiah Matthews (R-Sr., Texas City, Texas) both scored in double-digits: Minor with 15 points and Matthews with 12. Minor and Matthews also pulled down five and three boards, respectively.

Marvin Whitt (Sr., Birmingham, Ala.), in his usual fashion, contributed 15 points for the Rattlers, as well as five rebounds and two steals. Marvin Binney (Sr., Toronto, Ontario) also had a big night for the Rattlers, chipping in nine points, four boards, a team-high four assists and a block.

Beginning the game in a commanding manner, the Rattlers jumped out to a 14-0 lead before the first subs checked in. From there, the squad continued to extend their lead to 19 before the Mustangs got on the board with one free throw, moving the score to 19-1.

Continuing to break open the game even further in the first half, the Rattlers led the Mustangs by as much as 23 at the 4:23 mark. The Mustangs were able to pull within 17 toward the end of the period, going to halftime with the Rattlers leading 39-22.
The second half mirrored the first as the Rattlers surged forward to create as large as a 30-point gap between themselves and the Mustangs (0-2) around the 11-minute mark.

The Mustangs slowly chipped away at the Rattlers' lead in the latter half of the second frame, only to be within 20 points of the Rattlers, the narrowest gap of the half since the 19:15 mark.

Two free throws from Hudson McAshan (R-Fr., New Orleans) and a series of steals and shots solidified the Rattlers' 25-point victory over the Mustangs.
Throughout the matchup, the Rattlers significantly out-fouled the Mustangs 36-17, resulting in 23 points from the charity stripe for the Mustangs.

The Rattlers controlled the boards most of the night, out-rebounding the Mustangs 45-27. Leading the way on the boards for the Rattlers was J.J. Bolton (Sr., Beaumont, Miss.,) with eight, followed by Whitt and Minor with five apiece, Ryan Thomas (Sr., River City, Utah) and Binney with four each, and Justin Alexander (Sr., San Antonio), Kameron Pearce (Sr., Boise, Idaho), Joe Monroe (R-Sr., San Antonio) and Matthews with three apiece.

Looking ahead, the Rattlers will travel down to Kingsville, Texas to take on Texas A&M-Kingsville at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
