IGNACIO, Colo. — The St. Mary's men's basketball team opened their season Friday evening at the Skyhawk Classic against host Fort Lewis College, falling 70-57 despite bursts of energy from the Rattlers late in the game.

Marvin Whitt (Sr., Birmingham, Ala.) led the way for the Rattlers, putting 13 points on the board. J.J. Bolton (Sr., Beaumont, Miss.), Marvin Binney (Sr., Toronto, Ontario) and Kriston Minor (Jr., Huntsville, Texas) all chipped in seven points apiece.

Bolton pulled down 11 boards for the Rattlers, followed by Binney, who had six rebounds. The Rattlers were narrowly outrebounded 39-33.

It was a slow start for both teams until the Skyhawks began to pull away about halfway through the first half when they stretched their lead to nine. Their largest lead of the half was eleven, and the Rattlers were only able to pull within five, going into halftime trailing 35-26.

The Rattlers were not able to connect offensively in the second half, going 10 for 23 from the field and 10 of 19 at the line. The Skyhawks obtained their largest lead of the game at the 7:20 mark when they led 60-40.

A series of fouls and turnovers from the Skyhawks allowed the Rattlers to cut the lead down to 12 with under four minutes to play, but as the clock was winding down the Skyhawks sealed their victory over the Rattlers.

The Rattlers will play their final game of the Skyhawk Classic at 6 p.m. Saturday against Western New Mexico University.
