Rattlers drop heartbreaker to Newman in double overtime

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

WICHITA, Texas — After scoring a goal to tie it with just three minutes remaining in the match, St. Mary's Men's Soccer suffered a devastating loss in double overtime to Newman Monday.

The Jets netted a goal in the 32nd minute and had the looks of capturing a regulation victory but the Rattlers' second-half surge had Ignacio Fernandez score in the 87th minute to force overtime.

The squads were kept scoreless in the first overtime and it was the Jets who netted the golden goal in the 103rd minute with just their second shot since before the half.

The two regulation halves contrasted drastically for the Rattlers, who were held to just four shots in the first half, three of which came in the final seven minutes. The Rattlers then pounded on offense, jumping to nine shots in the second half to go on to outshoot the Jets 13-12 for the match.

The Rattlers' defense also picked up aggressively in the second half after allowing 10 shots from the Jets (7-3-1, 1-1 in conference) in the first frame to hold them to just two shots in the final 58 minutes.

The Rattlers were also sharp on precision, recording eight shots on goal to the Jets' six in a strong matchup that saw 42 total fouls and four yellow cards.

Mitchell Kilmer (RS-Fr., Frisco, Texas) was put to work early, facing 10 shots in the first half with four saves. Kilmer would go on to face just two more shots in the loss, falling to 4-4-2 on the season.

Fernandez's (Jr., Cordoba, Argentina) late-game goal assisted by Alexis Santamaria (Jr., San Antonio) was his third on the season in the Rattlers' loss that dropped them to 4-4-2 on the season and 1-1 in Heartland Conference play.

Fernandez, Jack Wolf (Jr., Richardson, Texas) and Vinny Guerrero (RS-Fr., San Antonio) all led the Rattlers with two shots apiece.

The Rattlers face Texas-Permian Basin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
