GOOOOAALLLL! Luna sends Rattlers to victory in OT

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — The Rattlers needed extra time Saturday night, but they made it well worth it.

Victor Luna raced through the defense and fired into the back of the net with 5:19 remaining in overtime to give the Rattlers an important 1-0 victory over Texas-Permian Basin in front of a roaring crowd of 204 at Sigma Beta Chi Field.

The goal, assisted Ignacio Fernandez, was Luna's fifth of the season, tying the talented junior from Sealy, Texas for the team lead in scoring.

The Rattlers improved to 2-1 in Heartland Conference play and 5-4-2 overall.

Luna's goal redeemed a miss at the end of regulation, as his dead-on look from five yards out went wide with three seconds remaining in regulation, sending the game to overtime. The Rattlers outshot UTPB 13-8 in regulation, but UTPB (1-7-1, 0-2) had one extra shot on goal at 6-5.

Mitchell Kilmer's six saves loomed large for the Rattlers, as the redshirt-freshman had three stops from straight-on looks to keep the game tied in regulation.

The Rattlers looked to be playing the final 20 minutes up a man, as UTPB's Rafael Moreira drew a red card while fouling Victor Luna on a breakaway attempt at the net. But less than two minutes later, that advantage was nullified as the Rattlers' Chris Nieto was given a red card to make it 10-on-10 the rest of the way.

The game marked the Rattlers' second straight extra-session game, having lost to Newman 2-1 in OT last Monday.

St. Mary's outshot UTPB 16-8 in the game.

The Rattlers will have a quick turnaround as they'll be back in action Monday, hosting Lubbock Christian at 2:30 p.m. at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
