Volleyball unable to defend DBU's comeback

DALLAS — St. Mary's Volleyball wrapped up the first round of Heartland Conference play Saturday, falling to Dallas Baptist 3-1.
 
The Rattlers and Patriots, who had nearly similar records entering the match, contested well with the Rattlers winning set one, 25-22. But the Patriots found momentum, winning the next three sets straight, 27-25, 26-24 and 25-20.
 
The squads shared identical records after the match with both now posting a 6-7 overall record and 4-4 Heartland Conference record.
 
The match also saw similar stats from both teams in a battle that saw 27 total ties and just four lead changes.
 
Patriots Krystal Wunderlich and Brooke Manley broke the 20-mark in kills with 20 and 21 respectively while Melissa Heft (Sr., San Antonio) and Kelsey Huber (Sr., San Antonio) led the Rattlers with 15 kills apiece.
 
Victorria Martinez (Sr., Arlington, Texas) led the match in digs with 34 while Kalyn Guthrie (Jr., Corpus Christi, Texas) recorded a career-high 52 assists.
 
Freshman Tarine Grace (San Antonio) continues to show prowess in her first year, marking a career-high four block assists as well as eight kills for the match.
 
Lauren Holman (Jr., Rowlett, Texas) also had four block assists and led the Rattlers in hitting percentage at .400 with nine kills and 20 total attacks.
 
The Rattlers face Our Lady of the Lake at 6 p.m. Monday in San Antonio at Mabee Gymnasium.
