TAMIU strikes late, defeats Women's Soccer in overtime

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LAREDO, Texas —St. Mary's Women's Soccer nearly took a series sweep over Texas A&M International Monday with a late-match penalty kick from Brittney Lacek but the Rattlers fell in overtime, 2-1, in the pair's second straight overtime match this season.

The squads played in a Heartland Conference matchup Monday for sole possession of the No. 3 spot in the league for postseason seeding that the Dustdevils were able to secure with the overtime victory at Dustdevil Soccer Field, 2-1.

Earlier this season, the Rattlers faced the Dustdevils in a non-conference matchup, which the Rattlers won 2-1 in overtime.

The shot differential was steep throughout the match with the Dustdevils firing off 20 total shots to the Rattlers' nine. However, the Dustdevils were unable to connect with efficient work from Rattler keeper Alyssa Taramona (Jr., Forney, Texas) who totaled 10 saves, until four minutes left in regulation.

Lacek (Jr., Gillette, Wyo.) broke open the game in the 70th minute on a successful penalty kick in her second goal on the season. The Rattlers were nearly able to hold off the Dustdevils' persistent offense but a goal from Claudia De Lara from 30 yards out tied it and forced overtime in the 86th minute.

Both the Rattlers and Dustdevils were only able to get off one shot in overtime but one was enough for TAMIU as it resulted in a goal from Jessica Parker seven minutes in.

The disappointing overtime loss drops the Rattlers to 8-7 overall on the season and 4-3 in Heartland Conference play while TAMIU improved to 7-5-3 and 5-2 in conference.

The Rattlers are currently No. 5 in league standings after the loss but are No. 4 amongst Heartland schools eligible for postseason play.

The Rattlers play in their final conference game of the regular season against rival St. Edward's at Noon Saturday in Austin, Texas. The Hilltoppers are currently No. 1 in the league with an undefeated 6-0 conference record.
