Rattlers secure first winning season since 2002

LAREDO, Texas — For the second time this season, Victor Luna was clutch.

St. Mary's Men's Soccer entered its fourth overtime match on the season Monday night against Heartland Conference foe Texas A&M International and for the second time this season Luna netted the winning goal, this time in double overtime to give the Rattlers a 2-1 heated win.

The Rattlers' 2-1 double overtime victory over TAMIU saw several looks from both squads but the match was quiet until late in the game when Chris Nieto (So., Dallas) netted the first goal of the game in the 75th minute. Nieto's first career goal as a Rattler gave StMU a 1-0 lead that the Rattlers nearly sealed in regulation but TAMIU struck with just two minutes remaining in the game to tie it, 1-1.

Neither team was able to connect in the first overtime and six minutes into the second overtime, Luna (Jr., Sealy, Texas) closed out the win with a shot from six yards out.

Ignacio Fernandez (Jr., Cordoba, Argentina) assisted the game-winning goal on a pass from 18 yards out for his third assist on the season, which leads the Rattlers.

Luna's golden goal Monday at Dustdevil Soccer Field marked his sixth season goal and second game-winner. Earlier this month, Luna scored the game-winning goal against Texas-Permian Basin in overtime.

The Rattlers outshot the Dustdevils (8-8-1, 4-3 in conference) 18 to 15 with seven shots on goal. Josh Stevens (Sr., San Antonio) and Luna led the Rattlers with two shots on goal apiece. Fernandez led with five total shots followed by Alex Gonzalez (RS-So., McAllen, Texas) with four. Impressively, the match also saw a total of 20 corner kicks.

Keeper Mitchell Kilmer (RS-Fr., Frisco, Texas) picked up three saves in the win, improving his record to 8-5-2 on the season.

The Dustdevils and Rattlers were tied for third place in league standings amongst Heartland schools eligible for postseason play before the match Monday. With the double overtime victory, the Rattlers are now tied with Newman for No. 2 in league standings with the Jets holding the tiebreaker over StMU after a 2-1 double overtime win earlier this season.

The double overtime victory marked the Rattlers' third straight win in their longest win streak on the season, improving them to 8-5-2 and 5-2 in Heartland Conference play. With just one game remaining in the regular season, the win over TAMIU also secured the Rattlers' first winning season since 2002.

The Rattlers face rival St. Edward's in their final regular-season game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Austin, Texas. The Hilltoppers are currently No. 1 in the league with an undefeated 6-0 conference record. The Rattlers will be looking for redemption as the Hilltoppers beat the Rattlers 2-0 earlier this season in a non-conference matchup.
