Rattlers show fighting spirit on #BattleForBear Night vs. TAMUK

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — A ferocious fourth-set rally wasn't enough for St. Mary's Volleyball on Tuesday, as the Rattlers dropped their match 3-1 to Texas A&M-Kingsville on #BattleForBear Night at Bill Greehey Arena.

Roaring back from the brink of defeat in the fourth set, the Rattlers reeled off seven straight points after trailing 24-17, earning match point twice themselves at 28-27 and 29-28.

But the Javelinas (14-8) outlasted the Rattlers (8-11), 32-30, in the marathon fourth set, winning the match 25-18, 22-25, 25-22, 32-30.

The Rattlers were honoring former St. Mary's setter Mikayla Bass on the evening, selling T-shirts and other items to help raise funds for the Rattler they call "Bear," who earlier this year was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis (MG), a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease that forced her to un-enroll from school.

Showing a fighting spirit late in the match that undoubtedly made Bass proud, Melissa Heft led the Rattlers' charge with 16 kills. Kelsey Huber added 11, while Taylor Obermiller had eight. Heft had a team-high .310 hitting percentage, while Obermiller also shined at .217.

Rachael Scicchitano had 28 assists and 16 digs, while Victorria Martinez logged 23 digs on the evening.

In the second set, the Rattlers mounted a comeback to overcome an early deficit, tying things up at 11-11 en route to grabbing a 17-15 lead — an advantage they maintained in the 25-22 triumph.

The Rattlers will return to action Saturday, when they resume Heartland Conference action against at Texas A&M International. The match will tip at 12 p.m. from Laredo, Texas.
