Rattlers fall to DBU as tying goal waved in chaotic finish

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Kaitie Kasperitis came running to embrace Lynsie Shaw and a wild celebration ensued for St. Mary's Women's Soccer after Shaw's apparent game-tying goal with 1:02 remaining Monday.

But after initially signaling the goal was good, the officials waved the goal moments later, as Dallas Baptist would hang on to survive for a 3-2 victory at Sigma Beta Chi Field.

Shaw's goal ricocheted off a Dallas Baptist player's arm before finding the back of the net, and the official ultimately called it a handball and gave the offending player a yellow card instead of allowing the goal.

The moment highlighted a chaotic final 15 minutes that saw St. Mary's (8-6, 4-2 in Heartland Conference) desperately try to claw back from a 3-0 deficit against Dallas Baptist (9-3-1, 3-1).

Rachel Gurinsky got the Rattlers on the board in the 76th minute when she snuck one past backup goalkeeper Madalyn Tschantz, who replaced Kerry Edwards in the net late in the half, for her fifth goal of the season.

Less than five minutes later, Kaitie Kasperitis was given a penalty-kick opportunity after Tschantz tackled a Rattler in the box. Tschantz drew a red card on the play, and Edwards came back in to protect the net the rest of the way.

Kasperitis gave the Rattlers hope when she converted the PK for her 12th goal of her record-setting season, cutting the deficit to 3-2 as the Rattlers played the final 10 minutes with the advantage.

It looked as if St. Mary's had done the unthinkable in erasing a three-goal lead with 15 minutes left when Shaw converted, but it wasn't meant to be as the goal was disallowed and the Rattlers fell in the end.

Goalie Alyssa Taramona had 10 saves for St. Mary's, which was outshot in the game 21-11.

The game marked the regular-season home finale for the Rattlers, who will be back in action Monday when they take on Texas A&M International in Laredo, Texas. StMU and TAMIU are currently fied for fourth place in the Heartland Conference standings.
