Stevens' PK lifts Rattlers past Dallas Baptist and into postseason

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Men's Soccer held off Dallas Baptist 1-0 in a fiery match Monday, securing a spot in the Heartland Conference Tournament in head coach Michael Bonelli's first year leading the program.

Josh Stevens broke open a scoreless game with a penalty kick with 34:29 remaining in the second half, which proved to be all the Rattlers needed in their regular-season home finale at Sigma Beta Chi Field. It marked the first goal in the senior defender's career.

St. Mary's (7-5-2, 4-2 in Heartland Conference) dominated possession all game, outshooting DBU (3-10-1, 0-4) 15-4 in the contest. The Patriots countered by trying to outphysical the Rattlers, committing 19 fouls to St. Mary's five while also drawing a pair of yellow cards.

But the plan backfired when they fouled Jack Wolf hard in the box early in the second half, setting up Stevens' game-winning PK opportunity.

The victory ensures St. Mary's its most victories in a season since 2007, when it won eight games in an 8-11 campaign.

The Rattlers are tied with Texas A&M International for third place in the league standings, trailing league-leading St. Edward's (4-0) and Lubbock Christian (4-1). With Lubbock Christian ineligible for the Heartland Conference's postseason conference as a provisional school, St. Mary's is assured of finishing no worse than fourth in the race for the tournament.

The victory also gave St. Mary's goalkeeper Mitchell Kilmer his second straight shutout.

St. Mary's will return to action Monday in its second-to-last regular-season game when it travels to Laredo, Texas to take on TAMIU in Heartland action. The game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. from Dustdevil Soccer Field.
