FORT SMITH, Ark. — St. Mary's Volleyball had its five-match winning streak snapped Thursday night by the Heartland Conference-leading Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions.

UAFS defeated St. Mary's 3-0 at the Stubblefield Center, using big efforts in the first two sets to help hold off a late rally from the Rattlers in the third, as the Lions won 25-17, 25-14, 25-23.

Freshman Tarine Grace led the Rattlers (6-6, 4-3 in Heartland Conference) with nine kills, while senior Melissa Heft — a week removed from her career-high 28-kill match — led all Rattlers (who recorded at least five total attempts) with a .222 hitting percentage. Heft added seven kills for St. Mary's, which was outhit .248-.109 by UA Fort Smith (13-3, 7-0).

Victorria Martinez, St. Mary's all-time digs leader with 2,000-plus career digs, added to her total Thursday with a team-high 26. Kalyn Guthrie led the Rattlers in assists with 16.

UA Fort Smith got off to a hot start, taking a 4-0 lead in the first set. StMU kept it close throughout the early portion of the set, climbing back to trail 4-3 and later 8-7. A Taylor Obermiller ace later in the set cut the Lions' lead to 13-10, but the point didn't spark the kind of rally the Rattlers hoped. UAFS went on a 6-2 tear to open up a 19-12 lead en route to closing it out 25-17.

The second set played out similarly for St. Mary's, as the Lions went on a 7-0 that turned a 8-6 Rattler deficit into a 16-6 hole, which proved too great a deficit to overcome in a 25-14 loss.

But credit the Rattlers for hanging tough in the third, putting a scare in the Lions to tie up the set 23-23 off a Lauren Holman kill late in the game. But the Lions countered with consecutive points to take the set 25-23, and in turn win the match 3-0.

St. Mary's, ranked fourth in the Heartland standings, will travel to Dallas for a pivotal conference match Saturday against Dallas Baptist. The match will tip at 12 p.m. from the Burg Center.
