Kasperitis breaks career goals record with fourth career hat trick

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — "What a night" doesn't begin to describe what happened Saturday on Senior Night in the Rattlers' 4-2 victory over the Oklahoma Christian Eagles.

All Kaitie Kasperitis needed to set the program's all-time career goals record was a hat trick on Senior Night. Difficult for some, but we're talking about Kasperitis here.

Kaperitis had the game of a lifetime, netting the three goals needed to break the St. Mary's Women's Soccer program record for most career goals, now set at 35 after Kasperitis' fourth career hat trick on Saturday with her third goal being off a successful penalty kick.

The senior broke the record formerly held by four-year Rattler Kyle Hyslop at 34, which was set in 2006.

"Breaking the record on Senior Night is something I'll remember for the rest of my life," said a visibly elated Kasperitis after the game. "My mom after I broke the record was even crying. It was great to make them (my parents) proud."

Kasperitis' first goal came in the 12th minute of the game off an expert header that the Corpus Christi, Texas native shot over the keeper on an assist from fellow senior Amy Adkins (Sr., El Paso, Texas) to give the Rattlers a 1-0 and make her one goal closer to breaking the record.

The Rattlers' second goal saw a career first from Karly Moe (Jr., Wadsworth, Ill.) who netted her first collegiate goal in the 26th minute.

The Eagles (0-12-1, 0-3) responded with two goals in the final frame but the Rattlers never trailed as Kasperitis pumped in two goals in the final frame as well.

Kasperitis tied the program's record with her second goal, which came in the 83rd minute on a close range shot assisted by Katy Primeaux (Fr., Keller, Texas).

With just three minutes left the game, fans and supporters may have wondered if Kasperitis would break the record Saturday.

But Kasperitis wasn't done yet.

As high-pressure as ever, the Rattlers were granted a penalty kick that Kasperitis was selected to shoot.

"I was a little nervous actually," said Kasperitis of her record-breaking penalty kick. "I knew it (the record) was on my mind, it's been on my mind the entire season. Getting two (goals) early and then Roxy (Cruz Santory) working hard was fantastic and got us a penalty kick and I stepped up and took it. There were words of encouragement from my teammates as I stepped up to take it.

"It was a bittersweet feeling. Lots of thanks to my teammates making this happen."

With the memorable win that saw a new program record, the Rattlers improve to 8-5 on the season and 4-1 in Heartland Conference play.

The Rattlers play their final home game of the season at Noon Monday against Dallas Baptist
