Volleyball nearly downs Hilltoppers in intense five-set thriller

SAN ANTONIO — A booming and vibrant crowd filled Bill Greehey Arena Thursday night as St. Mary's Women's Volleyball took on rival St. Edward's in its annual Breast Cancer Awareness Match and historic "Battle of the Saints" matchup.
 
And boy did they get a show.
 
The showdown between the rivals was of course an intense five-set thriller that had the Rattlers on the losing end as the Hilltoppers took it 25-15, 26-28, 25-12, 25-20 and 18-16.
 
The match was competitive with both teams vying to own the "Battle of the Saints" that featured an impressive showing from the Rattlers who were two points away from granting the Hilltoppers just their third loss on the season.
 
The five-set thriller also saw some heavy-hitting stats from the Rattlers including libero Victorria Martinez (Sr., Arlington, Texas) recording 40 digs, placing her No. 3 in the program's record for digs in a five-set match, and Melissa Heft (Sr., San Antonio) charting 16 kills. 
 
As a team, the Rattlers powered up to record a stout 16 block assists for the match and five block solos.
 
Rachael Scicchitano (So., McKinney, Texas) led in assists with 31 while Kelsey Huber (Sr., San Antonio) showed strong versatility, recording nine kills, three block assists, one block solo and impressive 30 digs as an outside hitter.
 
The teams swapped match leads throughout the first four sets and the Rattlers gained a sizable lead over the Hilltoppers in the fifth set but the 13-2 team showed resilience as theysnatched the match over the Rattlers.
 
 The Rattlers dropped to 8-10 overall and 5-6 in Heartland Conference play with the loss while the Hilltoppers improved to 13-2 overall and 7-2 in conference.
 
The Rattlers are back in action on Tuesday as they take on Texas A&M-Kingsville at 7 p.m. inside Bill Greehey Arena.
