Rattlers see winning streak end, drop match to LCU 3-1

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Lubbock Christian ended St. Mary's six-game winning streak Monday, prevailing 3-1 behind two second-half goals from Brooke Wendl in women's soccer action at Sigma Beta Chi Field.

The Lady Rattlers overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to tie things up 1-1 early in the second half on a Rachel Gurinsky goal, but they couldn't find another answer after either of Wendl's goals.

With the loss, St. Mary's dropped to third place in the Heartland Conference with a 3-1 mark and 7-5 overall, while Lubbock Christian remains a half-game behind league-leading St. Edward's at 3-0. The Chaparrals are 8-3 overall.

Wendl scored the go-ahead goal for LCU with 30:50 remaining in the second half, taking assists from Jamie Pugh and Claudia Sanchez for the important strike. She added an insurance goal with about 15 minutes left, taking the ball following a deflection and hammering it into the back of the net.

Earlier, Gurinsky put St. Mary's on the board when she connected from five yards out to tie the game at 1-1. The freshman used a Brittney Lacek assist to connect five minutes into the second half. It was Gurinsky's fourth goal of the season and Lacek's sixth assist, and gave the Rattlers something to show for what had become an improved offensive attack as the game wore on.

Though being outshot 15-10 in the early stages of the second half, the Rattlers had plenty of looks, none better than Sam Lara's attempt as time expired in the first half. Lara drove to the goal and had a good look in the final seconds, but her shot from 10 yards out ricocheted off the left post as the halftime buzzer sounded.

Lubbock Christian struck first in the ninth minute to take a 1-0 lead, as Sanchez scored from 25 yards out for her eighth goal of the season.

The goal ended St. Mary's streak of not allowing a goal, a stretch that spanned four complete games and over 410 minutes dating back to the first half of the Rattlers' overtime victory against Texas A&M International on Sept. 26.

Lubbock Christian outshot St. Mary's 26-12 on the day. Alyssa Taramona had eight saves in the net for the Rattlers.

The Rattlers will be back in action for Senior Night on Saturday, when they take on Oklahoma Christian at 5 p.m. at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
