Shorthanded Rattlers can't overcome Lubbock Christian

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Down a man for much of Monday's match, St. Mary's Men's Soccer battled valiantly for 63 minutes.

But Lubbock Christian was eventually able to break through playing 11-on-10.

LCU's Corey Hutchison headed in the go-ahead goal in the 86th minute, and Lennard Hansen added an insurance goal just under two minutes later to surge to a 3-1 victory over the Rattlers at Sigma Beta Chi Field.

With the game tied 1-1 in the first half, Ignacio Fernandez was given a red card with 22 minutes remaining in the frame, forcing the Rattlers (5-5-2, 2-2) to play the final 67-plus minutes shorthanded.

The call made Lee Micklethwaite's goal in the 12th minute all the more important, as the Rattlers took an early 1-0 lead off Micklethwaite's first goal of the season. But the Chaparrals countered, with Mitchell Hopkins winning a one-on-one battle versus Rattler keeper Mitchell Kilmer to even the score at 1-1, which remained the score at the halftime break.

St. Mary' was outshot 18-12 in the game. Kilmer recorded six stops for the Rattlers.

Lubbock Christian improved to 5-3-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

St. Mary's will be back in action for Senior Day on Saturday when it hosts Oklahoma Christian at 7:30 p.m. at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
