Temperature cools, but Rattlers still red hot with 6th straight win

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Not even the chilly winds that passed through Sigma Beta Chi Field on Saturday could cool off the red-hot Rattlers.

St. Mary's Women's Soccer picked up its sixth straight win — and fourth consecutive shutout — with a 2-0 shutout of Texas-Permian, using a first-half goal from Brittney Lacek and a second-half goal courtesy of Kristal Williams to hold off the Falcons before 163 fans.

The winning streak marks the best in coach Corwyn Ritch's 14 years leading the program, and also represents a school record as a member of the NCAA. The shutout streak is also a personal best for Ritch and a school record for St. Mary's as a member of the NCAA.

St. Mary's improved to 7-4 on the season with the victory over UTPB (1-8, 0-2), moving to 3-0 in the Heartland Conference. The Rattlers are tied with St. Edward's atop the league standings.

Goalkeeper Alyssa Taramona's excellence in the net also continued Saturday, as the junior from Forney, Texas saved three shots to keep a clean sheet. Taramona, who improved to 7-4 on the season, has gone nearly 406 without surrendering a goal.

Williams, a talented sophomore from Ponder, Texas, has a streak of her own, having now scored a goal in four consecutive games. Williams now has six goals on the season, and also earned her second assist on Lacek's go-ahead goal in the sixth minute.

St. Mary's has outscored opponents 19-2 during its six-game winning streak, including 15-0 over the past four games.

The Rattlers will be back in action Monday, when they host Lubbock Christian in a Heartland Conference game beginning at Noon at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
