Career match from Wright not enough in loss to the Chaps

LUBBOCK, Texas — Tied as the No. 1 team in the Heartland Conference, Lubbock Christian got a scare from St. Mary's Volleyball Saturday afternoon as the Rattlers pushed the match to four sets, falling 3-1.
 
The margins got increasing smaller with each set as the Rattlers figured out the Chaps' game, falling 25-18 in the first set and then 25-21 in the second. The Rattlers then charged in the third set, gaining and maintaining an early lead to win 25-18 but the Chaps had the final say, winning a heated fourth set 28-26.
 
MacKenzie Wright (Fr., Houston) stepped up big for the Rattlers, setting a new career-high in leading the Rattlers with 13 kills with an impressive .409 hitting percentage. The freshman also totaled three block assists.
 
Lauren Holman (So., Rowlett, Texas) totaled a match-high five block assists with 10 kills while Melissa Heft (Sr., San Antonio) pulled in nine kills.
 
Victorria Martinez (Sr., Arlington, Texas) led the match with 23 digs and setter Kayln Guthrie (Jr., Corpus Christi, Texas) led the Rattlers with 25 assists followed closely behind by Rachael Scicchitano (So., McKinney, Texas) with 23.
 
The Rattlers' loss to the Chaps (12-2, 9-1 in conference) drops them to 8-8 on the season with a 5-5 conference record to hold a fifth place spot in league standings.
 
The Rattlers return home Tuesday, playing Lone Star Conference contender Tarleton State at 7 p.m. inside Bill Greehey Arena.
