Volleyball goes 2-0 in tournament opener, sweeps MSU

LUBBOCK, Texas — The Rattlers have found their game.
 
Entering the Lubbock Christian Regional Crossover with a 1-4 record, St. Mary's ended the first day of the tournament 2-0 after sweeping Midwestern State and defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville in four sets, both of which are Lone Star Conference contenders.
 
The Rattlers swept Lubbock Christian Thursday, marking their first win on the season.

Another kill-heavy game gave St. Mary's Volleyball its second win and sweep on the season as it defeated Midwestern State Friday in the tournament opener.
 
Jenna Paul (So., Alvin, Texas) and Lauren Holman (So., Rowlett, Texas) each broke double-digits in kills with 13 and 12, respectively, as the Rattlers attacked for 48 kills over the three sets to Midwestern State's 36. The Rattlers (3-4) won the match 25-18,25-21 and 25-23, giving the Mustangs their first loss on the season.
 
Victorria Martinez (Jr., Arlington, Texas) led with 18 digs followed by Kelsey Huber (Jr., San Antonio) with 14. Rachael Scicchitano (Fr., McKinney, Texas) totaled 30 assists and Melissa Heft (Jr., San Antonio) led with four block assists while recording seven kills.
 
The Rattlers posted a solid .238 attack percentage in the win over Midwestern State (4-1), seeming to smooth out its early season 0-4 streak.
 
St. Mary's continued its boost from its second straight sweep into its next competition, holding out Texas A&M-Kingsville 21-25, 25-23, 29-27 and 25-22.
 
Huber led the Rattlers in kills in the four-set win over the Javalinas (3-4) with 17 followed by Holman with 13. Holman led with six block assists along with Heft, and recorded two block solos. 
 
Martinez led with 20 digs followed by Karlie Ortega (Sr., San Antonio) with 12.
 
St. Mary's continues the Lubbock Christian Regional Crossover in a final game against Texas A&M-Commerce at 11 a.m. Saturday in Lubbock, Texas.
