Volleyball records first win, sweeps Lubbock Christian

Box Score

LUBBOCK, Texas — In a tightly contested match, St. Mary's Volleyball swept Lubbock Christian Thursday to notch its first win on the season.

The road proved to be in favor of the Rattlers in their first away game of the season, but it wasn't an easy one as the Chaps (2-4) put up a fight in all three sets at the Rip Griffin Center, falling 25-23, 25-21 and 31-29.

St. Mary's (1-4) was able to hold provisional Heartland Conference member Lubbock Christian who came back from a six-point deficit in the final set to cause extended play up until the 31-point mark due to strong defense and the dominance of the Rattlers' Kelsey Huber (Jr., San Antonio).

The outside hitter led the night with a powerful 17 kills, two away from her career-best. Huber's team-high 17.5 points were critical in the Rattlers' win as well as Rachael Scicchitano's ability to fit quickly and immediately into the starting rotation after starting setter Mikayla Bass (So., Coppell, Texas) went down in injury last weekend. Scicchitano (Fr., McKinney, Texas) led with 38 assists and had three block assists.

The Rattlers' 14 blocks assists to the Chaps six denied Lubbock Christian's chances at a comeback throughout the match as well as Victorria Martinez's (Jr., Arlington, Texas) prominence as she led the night with 30 digs.

Karlie Ortega (Sr., San Antonio), Lauren Holman (So., Rowlett, Texas) and Lauren Slaughter (Fr., San Antonio) each had six kills apiece with Slaughter leading in block assists with five and Ortega leading in service aces with three.

The Rattlers will remain in Lubbock, Texas for the Lubbock Christian Regional Crossover tournament, playing Midwestern State at 11 a.m. Friday.
