Box Score SAN ANTONIO — On the floor Saturday night stood St. Mary's star post
Morgan Pullins, the school's co-record holder with 19 rebounds in a game. A few feet away sat former star Kristen Williams, now a graduate assistant who shares Pullins' mark with 19 boards.
The two had a prime view of
Kiara Etheridge's record-breaking performance.
St. Mary's freshman Etheridge pulled down a school-record 20 rebounds in a 51-40 victory over Angelo State, breaking the record of 19 that Pullins tied last season.
"Me and Morgan, we have this battle going on," said Etheridge, who has 29 rebounds through her first two games of college basketball. "Next time she might get 21. But I might get 22 the next game. It's going to be a fun season."
A night after grabbing 16 boards, Pullins hauled in 12 against Angelo State. The Pullins-Etheridge duo grabbed 32 of the Rattlers' 53 rebounds; Angelo State (1-1) had 33 boards as a team.
Jackie Woods led St. Mary's with 14 points,
Dezirae Elias scored 12 and Pullins chipped in 10 for the Rattlers, who improved to 2-0 to start the young season with another impressive showing at the St. Mary's Classic.
St. Mary's rolled despite a cool performance from 3-point range, hitting 5 of 23 shots from beyond the arc. But the Rattlers played strong defense, limiting Angelo State to 24.5-percent shooting from the floor, and had 30 points in the paint.
A night after scoring 24 in a victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville, Woods picked up right where she left off Saturday.
Twenty-seven seconds into her contest against Angelo State, Woods drained an and-one 3-pointer to give the Rattlers an early four-point lead they would never relinquish.
Later, with less than three minutes remaining in the half, Woods flashed similar theatrics, draining a step-back 3-pointer to beat the shot clock and push St. Mary's lead to 27-12.
St. Mary's took a 27-19 lead into halftime.
The Rattlers will be back in action Wednesday, when they travel to Stephenville, Texas to take on Tarleton State at 6 p.m.
