Volleyball smokes TAMIU, inches closer to playoff bid

LAREDO, Texas —St. Mary's Volleyball is closing on a playoff berth after smoking Texas A&M International on the road Saturday.

The Rattlers rocked the Dustdevils 3-0, winning 25-7, 25-14, 25-16, to move 1 ½ games ahead of Texas-Permian Basin for the No. 4 spot in the Heartland Conference standings with four matches left in the regular season.

The 37 points St. Mary's (12-12, 8-6 Heartland Conference) allowed against TAMIU (2-21, 1-13) tied the fifth-fewest points allowed in a three-set match in the program's history.

Lauren Holman led the offensive attack with 10 kills in 15 attempts, hitting .667 to go along with two blocks. Victorria Martinez had a match-high 20 digs, while Rachael Scicchitano led the Rattlers with 19 assists.

St. Mary's jumped to an 18-3 lead in the first set and never looked back, winning for the third time in four matches.

The Rattlers will be back in action Thursday, when they play the first of their final two home games. St. Mary's takes on Newman at 7 p.m. Thursday at Bill Greehey Arena.
