It took an overtime buzzer-beater to defeat St. Mary's Women's Basketball in its first loss on the season as Tarleton State pulled the heartbreak Wednesday, 74-73.
The Rattlers were gunning for their third straight Lone Star Conference victory and to extend their winning streak but a TexAnn layup with one second remaining on the clock brought the Rattlers to 2-1 on the season.
Three Rattlers broke double-digits with
Morgan Pullins (Jr., Franklin, Mich.) leading St. Mary's with 19 points followed by
Jackie Woods (Sr., San Antonio) with 17 and
Lia Kioa (Sr., Phoenix) with 15.
Freshman
Kiara Etheridge (San Antonio) pulled in an impressive game-high 14 rebounds and chipped in eight points.
St. Mary's was able to post a nine-point lead over the TexAnns (1-0) in the first half but ended down by three at the half, 34-31. Down by five with one minute remaining in regulation, the Rattlers fueled the overtime sparked by a clutch layup from Pullins and three-pointer from Woods to tie it up, 66-66.
Foul trouble hit the Rattlers hard as key players Pullins and Etheridge both fouled out of the game in overtime. As a team, the Rattlers totaled 28 fouls to the TexAnns' 16. But the Rattlers also led the defensive attack, totaling 13 steals and three blocks as a team.
The Rattlers take on their fourth straight Lone Star competitor Texas A&M Kingsville, which they defeated in the season-opener, at 1 p.m. Saturday in Kingsville, Texas.
