Sigma Beta Chi Field makes debut as TAMIU tops Men's Soccer

Sigma Beta Chi Field opened for the first time this season Monday.
Box Score SAN ANTONIO — Alex Gonzalez looked right at home as the St. Mary's men's soccer team broke in the brand-new Sigma Beta Chi Field on Monday.

The Rattler redshirt freshman found the back of the net about 10 minutes into the first game at the new field, prompting a loud applause from the crowd of nearly 100 as the Rattlers took on Texas A&M International.

TAMIU would answer, however, breaking free from a deadlock at the half by reeling off four unanswered goals to win 4-1 in Heartland Conference play.

Playing for the first time at their new home field following the grand opening of The Park at St. Mary's earlier this month, St. Mary's dropped to 3-4 in league competition. The Rattlers, ranked fifth in the Heartland, are 3-10 overall.

St. Mary's put up seven shots with three on goal, but couldn't connect again following Gonzalez's early goal. Tied 1-1 at the half, the Dustdevils (7-6) broke ahead on a goal from Eduardo Gonzalez in the 52nd minute. They put the game out of reach by back-to-back goals from Eduardo Serrano and Robert Dominguez over the final 10 minutes of the game.

The Rattlers will move their focus to Game 2 of a three-game homestand, as they'll take on McMurry at 5 p.m. Saturday at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
