Volleyball rallies, takes down McMurry for important victory

ABILENE, Texas — St. Mary's Volleyball needed a performance like this.
 
With their backs against the wall after losing a pair of sets that went long against McMurry, the Rattlers rallied back to win the match, 3-2, on the strength a 15-11 victory in Saturday's final frame.
 
Kelsey Huber had a career-high 19 kills and Victorria Martinez had a game-high 26 digs as St. Mary's prevailed 25-17, 24-26, 24-26, 25-20, 15-11.
 
With the victory, St. Mary's (11-12, 7-6 in Heartland Conference) remains tied with Texas-Permian Basin for fourth place in the league standings. UTPB defeated Newman on Saturday to improve to 7-6.
 
Hitting .298 on 47 attempts, Huber was one of three Rattlers with double-digit kills on the day. Lauren Holman had 12 while Melissa Heft added 11. Lauren Slaughter led the team with six blocks.
 
After winning the opening set, St. Mary's went toe-to-toe with McMurry (10-13, 6-6) over the ensuing sets, narrowly falling 26-24 in both. But the Rattlers battled valiantly, improving to 5-2 on the road in the process.
 
The Rattlers will return to action next Saturday, when they travel to Laredo, Texas to take on Texas A&M International.
