Fernandez Hat Trick Lifts Men's Soccer to Lopsided Win

SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's University Men's Soccer team won its second-straight contest with a 10-0 victory over Sul Ross State in a non-conference match-up on Wednesday night.

The 10 goals tie for the fourth-most in a single match in school history and are the second-most since the team joined the NCAA ranks in 2000, behind the 15 scored against Houston Tillotson on Sept. 20, 2001.

Sophomore transfer Eduardo Fernandez (San Antonio) came off the bench to score a hat trick and added an assist in 59 minutes of play. The seven points tie for the sixth-most in a single match in St. Mary's history and are the most since Jack Wolf recorded eight points against Newman on Oct. 5, 2013. He is also the first player to have three goals in a game since Nenad Markovic did so against Western Washington on Nov. 23, 2019.

Sophomore Sebastian Poblete (Miami, Fla.) got the scoring started for the Rattlers (2-2) in the 16th minute on a double assist from Ricky Alvarez (Dripping Springs, Texas) and freshman Lewis Boney (Leeds, Yorkshire, England).

Less than five minutes later, Boney found the back of the net with a double assist from Poblete and Filipe Bastos (Santa Maria de Faria, Portugal), and the Rattlers built a 5-0 lead at halftime with a penalty kick from Alvarez, and goals by Jad Basma (Houston) – who transferred to StMU from Sul Ross State – and Fernandez.

In the second half, StMU scored four goals in a 4:24 stretch, putting the game out of reach for the Lobos (0-4). During the flurry of scoring Oriol Gazquez Perez (Murcia, Spain), freshman Mekhi Carwise (Nolanville, Texas) and sophomore Sean Borland (Glasgow, Scotland) all scored their first goals of the season, while Fernandez added his third of the night on a penalty kick. Sophomore Dyllan Mendoza (San Antonio) had two assists during the stretch.

Freshman goalkeeper Nichita Misac (Lisbon, Portugal) recorded the first clean sheet of his young career but saw only one shot that was off target all night. On the other end of the pitch, the Rattlers fired off 31 shots with 15 on goal, as Fernando Hernandez and Matthew Martinez combined for five saves.

The Rattlers head out on their first road trip of the year, beginning on Saturday at No. 9 Rogers State. The team then travels to Salem, Ore., for a pair of contests against Saint Martin's and Northwest Nazarene.
