LAREDO, Texas — A lengthy weather delay pushed back the start of the St. Mary's University Women's Soccer conference opener by two hours on Wednesday. However, the Rattlers maintained their focus during the delay and defeated Texas A&M International 2-0.

The freshmen continued to shine for the 3-1-1 Rattlers as Helen Lazaro (Garland, Texas) stole the ball in the team's attacking third, maneuvered past the keeper, who came out to the edge of the penalty box, and delivered the ball into the lower right corner less than 90 seconds into the game for the first goal.

Kamrynn Martinez (Dallas) added the insurance goal in the 25th minute, leaping over a pair of defenders and driving the ball into the upper right-hand corner of the net from about 15 yards out.

It is the second goal of Lazaro's career and the fifth for Martinez as she has scored once in all five games for the Rattlers. It is believed to be the first time in the school's NCAA Division II history (2000-present) that a student-athlete has scored in five consecutive games.

Sophomore Molly Lyons (Galveston, Texas) posted the first clean sheet of her career, making four saves. The Dustdevils (0-3, 0-1) took 11 shots in the game, but only four were on target, and she stopped all four.

The Rattlers return home to the friendly confines of Sigma Beta Chi Field after going 2-1 on the road trip. They host UT Permian Basin on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in a doubleheader with the volleyball team, who faces UT Tyler at 1 p.m. inside Bill Greehey Arena.
