SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's University Women's Tennis team battled both Mother Nature and Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday, eventually winning 4-3 over the Javelinas after several rain delays.
The win is the fifth straight for the Rattlers, who improve to 11-6 on the season and remain unblemished in Lone Star Conference play (4-0). TAMUK is now 3-9 overall and 0-4 in LSC action.
The Javelinas jumped out to the early lead, winning by the identical scores of 6-4 on both courts one and two.
A forfeit by the Javelinas at line six in singles knotted the score at 1-1. Senior
Gia Posito (Houston) made quick work on court five, winning her fifth consecutive straight-sets match with a 6-3, 6-0 victory.
Texas A&M-Kingsville won the next two bouts, winning in straight sets on courts four and three to take the 3-2 edge, but the top two ladder spots provided thrilling three-setters.
Senior
Alessia Terlizzi (Andria, Italy) won her first set 6-0, but Maya Donker was leading 4-0 in the second set when a delay occurred and held on despite Terlizzi's push to win 6-3 in the second, forcing a decider. Terlizzi was able to get the double break for the 6-2 victory and stretch her winning streak to eight.
On court two, junior
Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.) started slowly, dropping the first set 6-0. The two were on serve, 4-3, during the rain delay, but Wu came back to win two of the final three games in the second set to win 6-4 and pushed through with several breaks of serve for the 6-1 finish in the third to clinch the team win for a team-leading fourth time in 2026.
Due to additional rain forecast for the next several days, the match against No. 22 Angelo State has been moved to Monday at 2 p.m. The Rambelles are undefeated this season with a 14-0 overall record and are 3-0 in Lone Star play. The Rattlers are a half-game ahead of them in the standings at 4-0, while UT Tyler is also 3-0.
