No. 9 Men's Golf Sits Sixth After Day One of LSC Championship

ROCKWALL, Texas — Inclement weather throughout the day saw the scores at the Lone Star Conference Championship higher than normal as the No. 8 St. Mary's University Men's Golf team sits in sixth place after the first two rounds.
 
Cameron and West Texas A&M are currently tied for the team lead at 594 strokes (+18), while UT Tyler is third (597), UT Permian Basin is fourth (600), and Midwestern State is fifth (602) after having a tournament low round of 283 in the afternoon. The Rattlers trail the Mustangs by five strokes at 605 and are 11 shots off the lead.
 
Sophomore Guillaume Paquette (La Minerve, Quebec) is tied for sixth on the individual leaderboard after coming in with a 71 on the second round and is now three-over for the tournament (76-71=147/+3). Paquette is five shots back from David Vega Gerstel, who leads the tournament with 142 after carding identical rounds of 71 on Monday. Gerstel has a three-shot lead over the Academic Golfer of the Year in Seth Bearden from Midwestern State.
 
Senior Kongpop Kaikaew (Rayong, Thailand), who was named the Lone Star Conference Golfer of the Year on Sunday evening, is tied for 24th place with 152 strokes (75-77=152/+8). Fellow senior Philip Hallstrom (Gavle, Sweden) is one stroke behind him, tied for 33rd place after shooting rounds of 78 and 75. 
 
Sophomore Elijah Galvan (Austin, Texas) took one shot off his morning round for a 78 in the afternoon to place himself in a tie for 46th place at 158 (79-78/+14).
 
Senior Baptiste Touchard (Saint-Agathon, France) has been battling illness and golfed only the first round, carding an 83. Junior Connor Smith (The Hills, Texas) entered the tournament for the second round and posted a 74, including three birdies on the back nine. 
 
St. Mary's will be paired with golfers from UT Permian Basin and Midwestern State for the final round of stroke play. The Rattlers need to make up six strokes to overtake the Falcons for fourth place to qualify for Medal Match play, which begins on Wednesday.
