SAN ANTONIO – On a gray and dreary day in San Antonio, the St. Mary's University Women's Tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 34 Midwestern State University for Senior Day.
After the conclusion of the match, the two Rattlers seniors,
Gia Posito (Houston) and
Alessia Terlizzi (Andria, Italy) were honored for their contributions to the program.
Director of Tennis
Bill Macom switched around the doubles partners for the final home match of the year, putting Terlizzi and junior
Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.) together for the first time since Wu was a freshman in 2024, while Posito and freshman
Breeze Simon (Dallas) also teamed up for the first time this year.
Neither team, however, was able to pull off a victory, with Terlizzi and Wu falling 6-3 at line one and Posito and Simon losing 6-1. The freshman tandem of
Isabella Olsson (Sverige, Sweden) and
Sarah Wooten (Beaumont, Texas) fought tough at number three, but were broken late for a 7-5 win for MSU.
"I think losing the doubles point hurt our confidence a little bit today, heading into singles," Macom said. "And once we lost the first set on four of those courts, MSU turned it up a notch and didn't let us get back into the match. At this point in the season, it's more mental and we need to do a better job of keeping our focus."
Wu won her second-straight match against a nationally-ranked opponent and her third in a row with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over #74 Emilia Gyorgy on court two. Wu is 9-1 over her last 10 matches and is 17-3 in the spring with the win.
Simon forced a third set at line six, winning the first set 6-3. Hattie Berend won the second set 6-2, and then the two went back-and-forth in the 10-set international tiebreaker, with Berend eventually winning 11-9.
The other four Rattlers also dropped their matches in straight sets.
St. Mary's wraps up the regular season with a road trip north, as they take on UT Tyler on Friday, April 24 and LSC newcomer UT Dallas on Saturday.
