CANYON, Texas — The St. Mary's University Softball team dropped a doubleheader to No. 2 West Texas A&M on Saturday evening, losing 7-2 and 12-0 in five innings.
The Rattlers scored their two runs on seven hits in the first game, and senior
Ariella Saenz (Pharr, Texas) helped her own cause in the circle, going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, however she fell to 7-4 with the loss.
The other five hits were scattered among five hitters as
Iliana Melendez (Seabrook, Texas),
Gabriela Banda (San Antonio),
Raegan Tennill (Corpus Christi, Texas),
Miah Corona (Eddy, Texas) and
Abigail Dela Rosa (La Grange, Texas) each had one. Three of the seven hits went for extra bases, as Banda and Dela Rosa each doubled and Melendez tripled, but the Rattlers were never able to sustain a rally against the number two team in the nation.
In the nightcap, Corona was 2-for-2 at the plate, while
Samiya Johnson (Corpus Christi) was 1-for-2, as three WT pitchers combined for the shutout. Senior
Breanna Ford (Corpus Christi) dropped to 2-2 with the loss in the circle, while freshman
Aly Garcia (Edinburg, Texas) and
Emily Ayala (San Antonio) each pitched in relief.
St. Mary's returns home to host Texas Woman's on Friday, March 20, for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
