Softball Sweeps Sul Ross State in Doubleheader

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's University juniors Gabriela Banda (San Antonio) and Samiya Johnson (Corpus Christi, Texas) both went 4-for-6 at the plate with a combined 10 RBIs in Softball's doubleheader sweep of Sul Ross State on Sunday afternoon. The Rattlers won 9-0 and 12-1 in a pair of run-rule contests to improve to 12-7 on the year.

St. Mary's put the pressure on the Lobos (2-11, 0-6) throughout the day, stealing 12 bases. The seven swipes in game one tie for the fifth most in a single game in school history and are the most in a game since 2011.

Freshman Peyton Miers (San Antonio) led the team with three stolen bases, and junior Bryley Westfahl (San Antonio) added two more to her impressive total. She is now a perfect 21-for-21 in thefts on the year.

Senior Emily Ayala (San Antonio) pitched a complete-game shutout in the first game, giving up only four hits with one walk and one strikeout, while senior Ariella Saenz (Pharr, Texas) did not allow any earned runs on three hits with one walk and four strikeouts in game two.

In the two games, the Rattlers scored their 21 runs on 19 hits, with two doubles, one each by the above-mentioned hitters, and a bases-clearing triple by Saenz in game two.

Seniors Raegan Tennill (Corpus Christi) and Abigail Dela Rosa (La Grange, Texas) also had hits in both games, as Tennill was 3-for-5 with five runs scored and two steals on the day, and Dela Rosa was 2-for-6 with a steal.

The Rattlers take to the road, playing at Texas Woman's on Saturday, Feb. 28, in a doubleheader beginning at noon. The Pioneers swept a twinbill over Texas A&M International in Laredo on Sunday.
