SAN ANTONIO — A tough second quarter for the St. Mary's University Women's Basketball team proved costly on Senior Day as the Rattlers lost 59-53 to Angelo State.
Prior to the game, the Rattlers (13-9, 8-8) honored the five seniors on the roster in
Quezia Bertoni (Sao Paulo, Brazil),
Imani Ivery (Houston),
Brooke Kleinig (Adelaide, South Australia),
Aina Maynou (Cabrera de Mar, Spain), and
Sian Phipps (Houston).
Bertoni had the hot hand early, scoring eight in the first quarter, and she ended with 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists, a steal and a blocked shot.
Junior
Allie Garcia (Adelaide) led the team with 21 points, tying her career-high, and she added two steals and three rebounds. Sophomore
Raynne Malik (London, Ontario) grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds, blocked two shots and swiped three.
Angelo State (13-9, 11-5) was led by Landry Morrow with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Stevi Lockhart scored 15 and blocked two shots, and Majik Esquivel chipped in 14.
The Rattlers led 14-8 after the first quarter, thanks in part to Bertoni's eight points, but the Rambelles took over in the second quarter, outpacing StMU 22-to-9. After the break, St. Mary's outscored ASU, 18-11, while the Rambelles won the fourth quarter 18-to-12.
St. Mary's shot 43.5 percent from the floor, and 83.3 percent from the free throw line, but only attempted six shots. They held ASU to 35.5 percent from the field.
The Rattlers head out for the longest road trip of the year, playing at Sul Ross State on Thursday evening and Western New Mexico on Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs defeated the Lobos 49-45 on Thursday in both teams' only game of the week.
