CONROE, Texas — The St. Mary's University Softball team stumbled against Saint Martin's in the final game of the DII First Pitch Invitational, dropping an 8-0 decision on getaway day.
The Rattlers (4-1) managed only two hits against the Saints (4-1), though the team did wreak havoc when they reached, stealing two more bases, with one each from junior
Bryley Westfahl (San Antonio) and junior
Samiya Johnson (Corpus Christi, Texas).
The two hits came off the bats of junior
Iliana Melendez (Seabrook, Texas) and sophomore catcher
Izabella Valdez (San Antonio).
Senior pitcher
Ariella Saenz (Pharr, Texas) fell to 1-1 this season after allowing five runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Both seniors
Emily Ayala (San Antonio) and
Breanna Ford (Corpus Christi, Texas) worked in relief.
Saint Martin's broke the game open in the second inning with five runs, adding one in the third and two in the fifth for its fourth win of the weekend.
The Rattlers travel to Bentonville, Ark., next weekend for the Alvy Early Memorial Classic at Memorial Park. StMU will take on Harding, Missouri S&T, Southeastern Oklahoma State, William Jewell, Emporia State and Truman State over the three days.
