Hit Parade Continues for Baseball

ALPINE, Texas — The St. Mary's University Baseball team exploded for 14 runs in the third inning en route to a 22-9 victory over Sul Ross State on Sunday to remain undefeated on the young season.

All nine hitters recorded at least one hit and scored one run in the second-straight 20-plus run game for the Rattlers (3-0).

Junior Dillon Lopez (San Antonio) blasted two home runs as part of his 4-for-5 day, scoring three runs and posting a career-high seven RBI. Senior Garrett Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas) also left the yard twice, going 3-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored.

Senior Jacob King (San Antonio) added the team's fifth home run in the game, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored in the cleanup spot.

The 14 runs in the third inning are the second-most scored in a single inning in the school's Division II history, one off the record of 15 in the second inning on March 2, 2007, at Oklahoma Panhandle State. That team went on to win 39-8.

Junior transfer Ashton Beaird (San Antonio) was hit by a pitch two more times, giving him six already on the season. He was 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Junior Eric Tenery (Kerrville, Texas) allowed seven runs on nine hits in his first outing for the Rattlers, but walked only one and struck out six for the win. Junior Gabe Cook (San Antonio) pitched the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits, walking one and fanning three.

Sul Ross State used six different pitchers on the day, and starter Jack Topolski was handed the loss.

The Lobos (0-3) struck first on the scoreboard, plating one in the bottom of the first. The Rattlers scored three in the second, 14 in the third, one in the fourth, and four in the fifth for their 22 runs. The team had 19 hits and neither team committed an error.

The Rattlers open the home portion of the 2026 schedule on Friday, Feb. 6, against Oklahoma Christian at 6 p.m. The Eagles began their season today with a 4-3 loss against UT Dallas and will play a doubleheader on Monday before traveling to San Antonio.
