DALLAS – Sometimes you have to shake things up to see what happens and that's what St. Mary's University Volleyball Coach
Kristine Pelky did on Friday night against one of the top teams in the Lone Star Conference, but DBU was able to win in straight sets, 25-19, 25-16, 25-20 at the Burg Center.
For the first time this season, freshman
Emerson Chang (Pearland, Texas) wore the opposite color jersey as she and junior
Kaylee Cavazos (San Antonio) each served as liberos. Cavazos led the team with eight digs, while
Taylor Alston (San Antonio) had seven and Chang added five.
The Rattlers (10-8, 3-5 LSC) also ran a 6-2 offense through a portion of the match, with senior
Haleigh Wilk (Salado, Texas) collecting 19 assists and sophomore setter
Liz Salinas (Helotes, Texas) added six.
Seven different Rattlers notched at least two kills, led by graduate student
Laurene Robinson (Bedford, Texas) with 13 – and she was the only player in the match to hit double figures, while senior
Olivia Rubio (San Antonio) led the match with five blocks as the Rattlers out-blocked the Patriots (13-3, 6-1) 5-to-2.
The three-set win for DBU is the first time the Rattlers have been swept all season as five of the previous seven losses came in five sets and the other two were in four sets.
The Patriots were led by Lauren Witte with nine kills, Zoe Gun with 17 assists, Olivia Clayton with four aces and 10 digs and Karly Wells with two blocks.
The match was the first of four on the road for the Rattlers, as they remain in the Dallas area to face Texas Woman's on Saturday in a rematch from the Lone Star Challenge, where the Rattlers won in five in San Antonio. The Pioneers were swept by St. Edward's in Denton on Friday evening.
