SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's University Men's Soccer team remained undefeated in Lone Star Conference action with a 2-1 victory over rival St. Edward's in the annual Battle of the Saints contest on Saturday evening at Cornerstone Christian High School.
The Rattlers (7-3, 3-0) fought back from a 1-0 deficit as the Hilltoppers (2-6-2, 1-3) scored in the 33rd minute and kept the lead for over 28 minutes. The Rattlers are in second place in the LSC standings with nine points, trailing defending national champion Midwestern State by one (3-0-1) and the Rattlers are on the league's longest winning streak at three straight.
Sophomore
Sebastian Poblete (Kendall West, Fla.) scored the brace for the Rattlers, finding the back of the net in the 61st minute off a one-touch pass from
Kai Louviere (Hondo, Texas) to
Lewis Boney (Leeds, Yorkshire, England) in the corner of the box, who found Poblete streaking into the center of the box to knot the score at 1-1.
In the 70th minute,
Ryan Guillaume (Trelex, Vaud, Switzerland) stole the ball from the Hilltoppers and passed it to Poblete, who scored with his left foot into the lower right corner from the six-yard line for the game-winning goal.
It is Poblete's first multi-goal game of the season as he ranks second on the squad with 12 points (five goals, two assists). He is the second Rattler this season to have more than one goal in a game, joining
Eduardo Fernandez (San Antonio), who scored a hat trick in the 10-0 win over Sul Ross State.
The Rattlers were the aggressors in the game, outshooting the Hilltoppers 19-to-9, including putting 10 of those shots on goal, while the defense limited the Hilltoppers to two of their nine shots being on goal.
St. Mary's remains at home, hosting UT Tyler on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Sigma Beta Chi Field. The Patriots lost a 1-0 contest at Lubbock Christian on Saturday evening.
