WICHITA FALLS, Texas – For the fourth straight meeting, the goal differential was one between the St. Mary's University and Midwestern State University Men's Soccer teams. However, it's also the fourth-straight one-goal win for the Mustangs, who are ranked No. 5 in the nation and win the Lone Star Conference regular season title for the second-straight season with their 1-0 win on Wednesday night.
Â
The Mustangs (14-0-4, 8-0-2), the defending national champions, controlled the ball early against the Rattlers (10-5-2, 6-2-2), but had their hands full in the second half.
Â
"Tonight was tough," said Head Coach
Johnny Clifford. "Ultimately, we should have done better when we had our spell on top, and our final thought was 'not good enough' tonight. I am proud of the guys' effort and pushing last year's national champions to the end and giving them a fight, but I know we can be better, and I hope we get another chance to see them."
Â
Midwestern State scored in the 63rd minute as the league's leading scorer, Parker Plaxco scored from two yards out.
Â
StMU freshman
Nichita Misac (Lisbon, Portugal), the defending LSC Goalkeeper of the Week, tied his career-high with six saves, while senior captain
Ricky Alvarez (Dripping Springs, Texas) put both shots on goal for the Gold and Blue.
Â
The loss moves the Rattlers into the third seed for the upcoming Lone Star Conference Tournament, and they will host DBU at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 31 at Sigma Beta Chi Field. The last time the two teams met in San Antonio in post-season play, the Rattlers won a thrilling double-overtime 2-2 game with a 5-3 PK decision.
Â
"We look forward to hosting Dallas Baptist at home in front of our own fans," Clifford said.
Â
In the regular season, DBU and St. Mary's ended in a 1-1 draw in Dallas, but the Rattlers are 15-4-1 all-time at home against the Patriots
