Battle of the Saints Volleyball Edition Does Not Go Rattlers Way

AUSTIN, Texas - The middle blockers for the St. Mary's University Volleyball team each had career afternoons, but it wasn't enough to lift the Rattlers to a Battle of the Saints win, as St. Edward's was victorious in four sets, 17-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-23.

The Rattlers are now 10-10 on the season and 3-7 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Hilltoppers improve to 11-9 overall and 6-4 in the league.

Senior Olivia Rubio (San Antonio) collected a career-high 10 kills on 13 swings with no errors for a match-high .769 hitting percentage, while freshman Madyson Carr (Houston) totaled a career-high 10 blocks, tying the St. Mary's single-match four-set record for blocks in a match, knotting Jaycie Pluenneke against DBU on Oct. 19, 2017.

Senior setter Haleigh Wilk (Salado, Texas) also recorded a career-high seven blocks on the day, closing in on a triple-double as she tallied 28 assists and 10 digs to tie for team-high honors. Her favorite target of the day was graduate student Laurene Robinson (Bedford, Texas) who led the club with 13 kills and added another five blocks, including the only solo stop of the match.

St. Mary's notched a season-high 15 blocks as a team as the 28 block assists ties the school four-set record from Sept. 4, 2018 against Our Lady of the Lake, while the 15.0 total blocks ties for sixth on the four-set list.

Junior Kaylee Cavazos (San Antonio) tied with Wilk for the team lead in digs with 10 and she served a match-high three aces.

In the first set, Robinson served the longest scoring streak of the season for the Gold & Blue, as they scored 12 straight to win 25-17.

St. Ed's jumped out to quick leads in the second and third sets, and the Rattlers were unable to catch up, though they closed within one in the second set and within two in the third set.

The two teams went back-and-forth in the fourth set with 11 ties and five lead changes, with the final tie at 23-23 before the Hilltoppers scored the final two points.
