WICHITA FALLS, Texas – All eight St. Mary's University Women's Tennis singles players placed in the top five of their respective flights at the Midwestern State Invitational over the weekend, while the four doubles teams all posted at least one victory in the team's second tournament of the fall.
 
Both sophomores Isabella Olsson (Sverige, Sweden) and Breeze Simon (Dallas) reached the finals of the Purple flight, but the flights were redrawn so several teammates didn't have to face each other. Olsson and Simon both won the rearranged matches for a perfect 3-0 weekend in singles play.
 
StMU newcomer Shiori Takeda, a junior transfer from Drake via Sydney, Australia, won the Green Flight, winning the final with a late break of serve in the first set and a 7-3 tiebreaker win in the second set over Ekin Ozmen from Midwestern State.
 
Both Ilona Hernandez Sanchez, a junior from Zoetermeer, South Holland and senior Madalyn Smelley (Ocean Springs, Miss.) brought home second-place finishes. Hernandez Sanchez lost in a three-set tiebreaker in the Blue flight, while Smelley lost in the finals of the Red Flight.
 
Senior Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.) took third place in the Blue Flight, defeating Cameron's Alexa Garcia handily in the third match, for a 2-1 record, while sophomore Sarah Wooten (Beaumont, Texas) dropped a straight-sets match in the 3-4 Playoff of the Green Flight to finish fourth.
 
Junior transfer Allison Blanco (Alajuela, Costa Rica) dropped her first match in the Red Flight, but bounced back to win her final two, knocking off opponents from Cameron and Washburn to win the final of the West side, for fifth place.
 
Blanco and Takeda teamed up to reach the finals of the Red Flight in doubles. They received a bye in the quarterfinals, and didn't drop a game in the semifinals before falling 6-4 in the finals to a pair from Midwestern State.
 
Both the teams of Smelley and Wu and Simon and Hernandez Sanchez reached the third-place match in the Blue Flight, but the draw was shuffled so the teams didn't have to face each other. Smelley and Wu knocked off a pair from Cameron to finish 2-1, while Simon and Hernandez Sanchez lost to the team from Midwestern State that knocked their teammates out of the semifinals.
 
Olsson and Wooten dropped their first match to Ekin Ozmen and Jasmine Crain from Midwestern State, then won the west finals in the Red Flight bracket over Cameron. Since the team had only played two matches with a bye in the semifinals, they rematched with Ozmen and Crain, winning a thriller in a tiebreaker, 8-6 for the 7-6 set victory and a 2-1 record on the weekend.
 
The Rattlers return to Rohrbach Tennis Stadium to host the postponed Brother Al Invitational on Friday, Oct. 16 and Saturday, Oct. 17.
