Women's Basketball Survives Late Push From Comets

SAN ANTONIO — Despite a late push by UT-Dallas, the St. Mary's University Women's Basketball team held on to win 64-60 on Saturday afternoon in Bill Greehey Arena.

The Comets (9-9, 6-5) outscored the Rattlers 27-to-22 in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to two with 27 seconds remaining, but senior Quezia Bertoni (Sao Paulo, Brazil) drained both free throws with 23 seconds to secure the team's 11th win of the year (11-6, 6-5). Bertoni ended the day with 11 points, the seventh time this year she's eclipsed double digits.

Sophomore Raynne Malik (London, Ontario) posted the team's first double-double of the 2025-26 season with 11 points and 13 rebounds, and she tied her career-high with five blocked shots. The 11 points were a season-high for the forward, while the 13 rebounds tied the most this season.

Junior Allie Garcia (Adelaide, South Australia) led the team with 16 points, while Bertoni chipped in 11. Sophomore Lena Newby (Cibolo, Texas) came off the bench to grab a career-high 10 rebounds as the Rattlers out-rebounded the Comets 52-to-35 on the afternoon.

Senior Imani Ivery (Houston) made a driving layup with eight seconds left to cut the Rattlers' deficit to three, 12-9, at the end of the first quarter. At the break between the periods, Head Coach Valerie Huizar sparked the team, as StMU outscored UTD 15-to-6, as Garcia scored six to match the Comets, and Malik and Brianna Vargas (El Paso, Texas) each added three points. The defense held the Comets without a three-pointer (0-for-7) and 2-for-15 from the field.

The Rattlers led for 31:19 of the 40 minutes in winning their second-straight game.

The team heads out on the road, playing at Texas A&M International on Thursday, Feb. 5 and at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday, Feb. 7.
