SAN ANTONIO — Head Coach
Dave Ulrich shook up the lineup on Saturday, and while it didn't result in a W, fans of St. Mary's University Volleyball got good looks at what the youth on the roster is capable of during the second day of the Rattler Invitational.
St. Mary's dropped to 2-6 on the season with a three-set loss to No. 4 Central Oklahoma and fell in four hard-fought sets to Fairmont State.
Seniors
Dallasstar Johnson (San Antonio) and
Landri Withers (Stephenville, Texas) were named to the All-Tournament team after their efforts on the weekend. Johnson led the team with 1.36 blocks and 1.86 kills per set over the four matches, while hitting .288, and Withers led the team with 3.36 kills per set, adding 2.79 digs and a .245 hitting percentage.
The Rattlers head to the Lone Star Conference Challenge, facing Texas Woman's and DBU in Denton on Thursday and Friday, respectively. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. on both days.
CENTRAL OKLAHOMA 3, ST. MARY'S 0
The Bronchos (9-0) continued to roll through the season, as the Rattlers became the eighth-straight team to get swept by UCO, falling 19-25, 13-25, 22-25. UCO also swept Florida Southern in its last match at the tournament to stretch its streak to nine-straight to begin the 2025 season.
For the Rattlers, Withers led the team with 10 kills, while freshman
Liz Salinas (Helotes, Texas) saw her first extended action, starting the third set and leading the team with 12 assists. Senior libero
Alyssa Koehl (New Braunfels, Texas) paced the team with 16 digs and four different Rattlers each had one service ace, and four had one block, though only Johnson recorded one of each.
FAIRMONT STATE 3, ST. MARY'S 1
The Rattlers came out on fire in the first set against the Falcons, winning 25-13, but Fairmont State made some adjustments afterward and fought back to win the next three sets, 25-22, 25-16, 25-19.
Withers again led the team with 18 kills, while senior
Laurene Robinson (Bedford, Texas) was right behind her with 16. Robinson also posted the first double-double of her career, recording a career-high 13 digs.
In the first start of her career, Salinas also collected her first double-double with 42 assists and 11 digs, and added four blocks. Johnson posted eight kills with only one hitting error to hit .333 (8-1-21), and she and fellow senior Landy Cate (Hot Springs, Ark.) tied for match-high honors with five blocks each.
Koehl was all over the court in the match, leading the way with 34 digs, 13 more than any other player in the match, and she was the only player to serve multiple aces, notching three. Senior
