SAN ANTONIO — Rain disrupted the Brother Al Invitational, but the St. Mary's University Women's Tennis team was able to overcome, starting the season off strong.
Newcomers Madalyn Smelley (Ocean Springs, Miss.) and
Isabella Olsson (Sverige, Sweden) both went 2-0 and were slated to play in the finals of their respective flights before the tournament was interrupted by Mother Nature.
Suryanshi Suryanshi (Bikaner, Rajasthan, India) was the only Rattler able to play three singles matches, posting a 2-1 record for third-place in flight two.
Three doubles teams swept through the flights en route to the titles. Smelley and junior
Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.) defeated pairs from UIW, Texas A&M-Kingsville, and Trinity in winning flight one, while the freshman duo of Olsson and
Sarah Wooten (Beaumont, Texas) lost only five games over three matches to go unbeaten in flight two. The tandem of senior
Gia Posito (Houston) and Suryanshi also were 3-0 in flight two, which was played in a round-robin format.
The Rattlers remain at home, hosting the Kimbell Memorial Tournament beginning on Friday.
