Softball Stumbles in Austin

AUSTIN — The St. Mary's University Softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader on Sunday at St. Edward's, 8-7 and 4-1.
 
The games started a 10-game road trip for the Rattlers, who fall to 21-22 overall and 16-16 in Lone Star Conference play.
 
StMU stays in the East Division for the second round of action, playing at Texas Woman's on Friday at 4 p.m. and UT Tyler on Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
Game One Recap
The Rattlers fought back twice to take leads in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Hilltoppers (24-18, 18-14) answered each time to win the first game 8-7.
 
Freshman Izabella Valdez (San Antonio) went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run scored and an RBI, while senior Lauren Gonzales (San Antonio) and junior Abigail Dela Rosa (La Grange, Texas) each added two hits, and Dela Rosa led the team with two RBIs. Senior Lauryn Ramos (Marion, Texas) added her second home run of the year as the Rattlers scored seven runs on 11 hits.
 
Emily Ayala (San Antonio) started in the circle, pitching 3 2/3 innings. She gave up two earned runs on nine hits with two walks. Senior Savannah Youngblood (Kingwood, Texas) fell to 1-4 on the year, pitching the final 2 1/3 frames. St. Ed's scored two earned runs on six hits off her.
 
The Hilltoppers scored their eight runs on 15 hits, stranding 10 runners on base, and they were helped by two StMU errors, as half of the runs in the game were unearned.
 
Game Two Recap
St. Mary's attempted a comeback in the final inning but was able to plate only one run after SEU scored three in the third and one in the fourth for the 4-1 victory.
 
Dela Rosa continued her strong day at the dish, going 2-for-2 with the lone run scored and adding a triple to her total for the season. She now has five, which is tied for the 10th most in StMU single-season history.
 
Senior Madeline Bloom (Poway, Calif.) pitched a complete game, giving up three earned runs on seven hits with three walks to drop to 8-5 on the year.
