Men's Tennis Falters at DI New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS — Facing its second-straight Division I opponent, the St. Mary's University Men's Tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision at New Orleans on Friday morning.

The Rattlers move to 3-2 on the season, as the game against Lamar on Wednesday was an exhibition contest, while the Privateers improve to 6-3 on the year.

"We still need more focus on our doubles fundamentals," said Director of Tennis Bill Macom. "Our first serve percentage was low, and our return of serve percentage was better than last match but needs more work. We did a much better job in singles, but at this level, you must have the doubles point for good momentum."

Senior Daniel Matheu Baldor (Madrid, Spain) came back and forced a third-set tiebreaker after dropping the opening set 6-2. He won set two 6-4 and remained close in the 10-point breaker, falling 10-8.

Senior transfer Pierre Copin (Vidauban, Var, France) got a late break of serve to win his opening set 7-5, then dropped the second set by the same score on court four. He and Joseph Townes battled in the 10-point tiebreaker, but Townes eventually won 10-7.

After being shutout in his opening set, freshman Lincoln Baldonado (Glendale, Ariz.) buckled down to force a tiebreaker in the second set before eventually falling 7-6 (7-2) at number five.

The Rattlers remain on their Spring Break road trip, playing at #14 Florida Southern on Sunday, March 9 at Noon (ET)/11 a.m. (CT).
