SAN ANTONIO — After the St. Mary's University Softball team waited through more than four hours of weather delays, the night ended in heartbreak as they dropped both games of the doubleheader to Texas Woman's, 3-2 and 1-0 on Monday.
In the second game, the teams waited out a 44-minute lightning delay in the top of the third inning. There was also a 3:23 lightning and rain delay in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Rattlers (20-19, 15-13) outhit the Pioneers (17-17, 13-15) in the first game, collecting two runs on seven hits, while TWU had three runs on four hits, and they were aided by three Rattler errors.
The seven hits for StMU came from seven different players, while senior
Mene'e Padilla (San Antonio) and junior
Arianna (AJ) Sanchez (San Antonio) each recorded an RBI. Padilla's hit was the first triple of her career, as she placed the ball perfectly down the right field line to score freshman
Izabella Valdez (San Antonio) from first base.
Junior
Ariella Saenz (Pharr, Texas) took the loss in the circle to move to 3-5 on the year. Saenz allowed only two hits in three innings and both runs scored were unearned. Junior
Emily Ayala (San Antonio) started, giving up one unearned run on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Senior
Savannah Youngblood (Kingwood, Texas) retired the side in order in the seventh.
In the second game, senior
Madeline Bloom (Poway, Calif.) pitched the complete game. She gave up only a solo home run in the seventh – after working hard with her teammates to return the field to a playable surface after the rainstorm came through the area. She scattered five hits over the seven frames, walking only one and striking out three to move to 7-4.
Senior
Lauren Gonzales (San Antonio) and freshman
Miah Corona (Eddy, Texas) each had a hit for the Gold and Blue, with Corona doubling down the left field line in the fourth inning.
The Rattlers remain at home to host rival St. Edward's on Friday to celebrate the amazing career of former head coach Donna Fields. The first game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
